Doing business in Africa is typically perceived to be associated with various barriers and risks which result in particularly high transaction costs. As such, investment activity from private-sector players around the world has been generally limited and undertaken with a great deal of caution in most sectors. One sector that has been an outlier, however, is the telecommunications industry. As a highly dynamic player in consumer technology, China has been increasingly active in this sector.

There has been a surge in activity by Chinese players in the continent’s telecommunications industry. With investments exceeding $5 billion, this industry is the fifth-largest recipient of foreign direct investment (FDI)on the continent. Transsion’s mobile phone brands have also taken the continent by storm,claiming 38 percent of the continental market share, becoming the top provider of smartphones in Africa.

The increasing volumes of telecommunications products and services consumed by Africans have brought about a decreasing cost curve whilst allowing producers to remain pro fitable.This is consistent with the fact that nearly a quarter of Chinese enterprises in Africa recovered their initial investment within 12 months, while 50 percent reported it took them three years or less.

Whilst there are doubts around whether it would be possible to sustain these kinds of gains over the long term,conditions on the continent are gradually improving. Among the factors working in favor of the continued expansion of this sector, is the continental free trade zone for goods and services that has gained the support of most African nations and is poised to create a regulatory environment, conducive to even greater market penetration in the African telecommunications sector.

The sustained expansion of Chinese telecommunications players into the African continent over the past five years is testament to the con fidence in this sector. High returns and a very strong outlook will enhance this as the African market becomes increasingly accommodating for the entry and operation of players in telecommunications.

1/morocco march: Moroccan BMCE Bank of Africa and China Development Bank have signed a memorandum of understanding, which hopes to promote joint ventures in infrastructure, transport, auto manufacturing, and sustainable development projects.

2/uganda march: China Communication Construction Company and Chinese Chamber of Commerce received praise for supporting sports activities in Uganda. The annual Entebbe Marathon, which raises funds to repair old public schools, was supported by Chinese investors again this year.

Among the reasons for the strong FDI in this sector has been that the investments here tend to be less capital-intensive and easier to extract amid uncertainties. But Africa has by and large proven itself worthy of longer-term investments not only as they relate to the services element of the telecommunications industry, but also the manufacturing of hardware.With a changing global industrial regime that favors the fragmentation of the production chain,Chinese firms should consider completing more of the manufacturing processes in African countries. This not only moves African economies up the global value chain, but also has the potential to introduce greater overall cost and productivity efficiencies to the manufacturing process.

6/Zimbabwe march: A Chinese-built hydro-electric plant,Kariba South Hydro Power, has been successfully upgraded.The $533 million expansion, completed by SinoHydro, adds 300MW to the plant’s capacity, making it the largest power plant in Zimbabwe.
