Machineries are widely used on farms in Shuanggou Town,xuzhou of Jiangsu Province

Using drones as delivery vehicles for spraying phytosanitary liquid designed to control crop diseases over corn fields may sound like science fiction, but in the town of Shuanggou in east China’s Jiangsu Province, it is now a reality.

Not too far back in its history, thousands of hectares of land in Shuanggou were subdivided into small plots and painstakingly cultivated by thousands of households.Today, brand-new harvesting machinery and spraying drones - whose price can reach up to 60,000 yuan ($9,500) each- are widespread. Such change finds its source in the transition toward large-scale farming, put forward as an effective means to achieve agricultural modernization and increase yields, as stated in the report to the 19th National Congress of the Communist Party of China (CPC) held in 2017.

Getting off the beaten track

Shuanggou, located in Suining County,Xuzhou City, Jiangsu, comprises 25 villages. Many young villagers chose to work in big cities, leaving many plots of farmland lying fallow. “Our town is short of young laborers. In addition, each household cultivating small plots of lands has hindered our further development, as large agricultural machineries cannot be used on small plots,”said Shen Kai, Deputy Secretary of the CPC Shuanggou Town Committee. “Thus, we decided to establish cooperatives in each village so as to better utilize the farmland.”

In 2016, to provide even better services to these cooperatives, the town also created Qiuge Agricultural Development Co.Ltd., an agricultural services company with a registered capital of 20 million yuan ($3.17 million), to plan the agricultural development as a whole and coordinate development of these cooperatives. It also provides services such as farming material supply,technological training, and grain drying,storage and sales.

Thanks to these new agricultural methods, Shuanggou’s collective and individual income has increased significantly. In 2016,local collective farms achieved a sales revenue of 17.64 million yuan ($2.8 million) and a net pro fit of 3.6 million yuan ($569,000).The same year, Qiuge also saw its pro fits grow to 500,000 yuan ($79,308).

Four months later, the experiment bore fruit: after harvesting, the corns are processed locally and sold to nearby restaurants, hotels and supermarkets by Qiuge,yielding a total of 800,000 yuan ($126,900).

In Jiwan, for example, before the establishment of village cooperatives, more than 200 hectares of fields were cultivated by 700 households. These households had different technological levels and financial supports, and many of them could not get the best out of their lands. After local cooperative was established, crop sowing practices have been standardized, and the use of machinery for harvesting and pesticide spraying is now a customary procedure. As a result, the average yield per hectare has nearly doubled.

Total facelift for Shuanggou

In addition, the company, with branches specialized in catering, organic food industry, and import-export business, also endeavored its support in innovation in agricultural production. In March 2017, Qiuge launched a pilot project to test the feasibility of growing fruit- flavored corn in Guanlu,another village in Shuanggou. A total of 200 mu (13.33 hectares) of farmland were used to grow the new variety.

For individual farmers, they can receive up to 800 yuan ($127) per year by transferring 1 mu (0.07 hectare) of their landuse right to a local cooperative. They also get dividends from collective farms, which amounted to 56 yuan ($0.16) per mu in 2016.Meanwhile, as the fields are now cultivated collectively and mechanically, farmers do not have to work in the fields anymore and can find employment in local cooperatives,collective farms or factories. Each cooperative creates at least 10 permanent jobs, with an annual salary of 20,000 yuan ($3,200)per person, as well as nearly 2,000 seasonal jobs, with an annual salary of 6,000 yuan ($950).
