Should Self-Driving Vehicles Be Encouraged?

Late this March, China’s Internet giant Baidu became the first self-driving car developer to obtain temporary license plates to carry out self-driving tests on public roads in Beijing. In preparation, 33 roads with a total length of 105 km were opened for automatic car tests in the city’s Daxing, Shunyi and Haidian districts. Road signs, which included traffic control devices, road markings, highway signs and traffic signals, were put in place prior to testing to ensure public safety.

A similar self-driving test was carried out in early March by Uber in the city of Tempe, Arizona in the U.S., but unfortunately, while undergoing testing, that company’s vehicle was involved in an accident, killing one pedestrian.

This is not the first time a self-driving vehicle recorded a road accident. The increase in accidents caused by self-driving vehicles continues to spark debate on whether such technology should be encouraged. Some vehicle experts still question the safety of this technology, while some car manufacturers doubt its readiness for the market. Self-driving cars, like robots, are programed. They adhere to strict standards on road regulations. Their mobility is not compromised by driving under the in fluence of alcohol, road rage, over speeding and distractions. Hypothetically, self-driving cars can detect what humandriven cars cannot.

While one line of thought is to reduce the number of humans behind the wheel, others see this as a flaw. They are of the opinion that humandriven cars are safer in that drivers can quickly react to avoid minor road accidents. Despite the hot debates, manufactures are still making great strides to ensure car safety and accident reduction, and continue to invest heavily in developing this technology.

Some drivers believe the pleasure of driving comes from the design of the car, but some self-driving vehicles don’t even have steering wheels. Where is the thrill in that? The whole purpose of technology should be to assist human beings and not to replace them. Call me old-fashioned, but I absolutely disagree on investing intelligence and resources for the purpose of removing drivers’hands from the wheel.

It is the perfect time to boldly encourage the development of self-driving technology. Selfdriving has many advantages that cannot be matched by human driving. One of these is rapid response. It is true that self-driving technology has its shortfalls.This is why we need to regularly test and update self-driving vehicles. With regard to safety, we should not only focus on a specific accident but the percentage of recorded fatalities. Motor vehicles can never be 100 percent safe. Safety,convenience and ef ficiency should be the main priorities for now. Take for instance the number in accident fatalities recorded daily due to humandriven cars and compare it to those recorded from selfdriving ones, it is obvious that self-driving cars are much safer. In the near future, these cars will be the better option.They will be fitted with a highly sophisticated collisionavoidance system like those found on modern trains and buses.

It is not yet time to internationally promote self-driving technology. Self-driving vehicles are not 100 percent safe. There has been a significant increase of fatalities recorded in vehicle accidents. These accidents are not entirely due to human error but self-driving technology,and this puts into question the role of the driver in preventing an accident. Drivers still need to be skilled on how to use a vehicle. Shifting our reliance to this technology will only increase accidents. For example, what happens if all other technology fails on the streets,such as traf fic signs? The technology still needs to be developed and tested before it is made available on the market.

In the next five to 10 years, the whole auto industry will have flooded the markets with these cars due to its fast evolving technology.China has more advantages in large-scale commercialization of the self-driving industry because Chinese consumers are quick to embrace new technologies. According to China’s 13th Five-Year Plan(2016-20), self-driving technology has been regarded as a cutting-edge technological development. The best way to improve the technology is to carry out practical road tests,then accumulate data on recorded experiences. It’s good that China is allowing self-driving vehicles to have tests carried out in open environments.This move is critical and significant toward making a technological breakthrough. Indeed,we are on the right road to success.

I don’t think it is necessary to promote self-driving vehicles when we can simply use assist driving. Developing self-driving technology is more complicated and requires huge amounts of capital investment, not forgetting great amounts of social resources. Assist driving technology, on the other hand, requires a lot less. If applied to the auto industry, it achieves similar results.
