TenForecasts for theChinese Medical Industry in 2018

Beijing, January 24th, the IDC recently issued “IDC FutureS-cape: 2018 Forecast for Global Healthcare Industry – Enlightenment on China” (January 2018). The report gave forecasts on the development roadmap of the global healthcare industry, covering the impact in the next 12 to 36 months on medical institutions by single and multi-disciplines and as a whole. From the perspective of medical digital transformation driven by new technologies, the report outline the major trends in next three years for traditional Chinese medical services, hospital management, drug research and development, healthcare payments, patient relations and so on,to provide a reference for hospitals and life science organizations and technology providers, and to support the planning and budgeting.

The predicated top ten trends in healthcare industry are as follows:

By 2019, more than half of life science and healthcare facilities will allocate dedicated resources to support the collection, sharing and analysis of real world evidences, to meet the need of their organizations.

The growing availability of real world evidence (RWEs) in the medical field enables life science and medical institutions to further improve drug effi-cacy and to develop new drugs. Around the world, RWE systems are being set up in countries including China. As RWE data gets widely used, there will be greater need for safe cloud platforms, process automation, advanced analytics, machine learning, and cognitive computing technologies, to secure a better and reasonable use of RWE data.

By 2019, mobile digital connecting systems that can link life science companies, patients and hospitals will increase by 50%, strengthening brand recognition, facilitating clinical trial recruitment and improving compliance.

IDC expects, the mobile digital connections between life science companies, patients and hospitals will continue to increase rapidly, including the number of applications launched or developed by life science companies and the connections between patients and hospitals, which will help improve drug compliance and efficiency in clinical trial recruitment, therefore to reduce costs, enhance trust between hospitals and patients, and heighten the treatment outcomes. China is estimated to integrate the implementation of prescription sharing mechanism, application of PBM(pharmacy benefit management) and medical payment with digital connections.

By 2020, hospitals will double the application of IoT-based asset tracking and inventory management system, in order to improve patient safety, employee satisfaction and operational efficiency.

By 2020, the amount of claims against medical equipment suppliers may top on billion US dollars, due to the deaths caused by cyber-attacks of connected medical devices during hospitalization.

Based on IDC Health Insights, in the next three years, creating unchangeable records for supply chain management and patient identification by Distributed Ledger Technology (DLT) will be the focus of healthcare organizations. Now 5.7% of medical institutions and 10.8% of payers say they are prepared for block chain technology, and the ratio is as high as 30.3% and 50.1% respectively for players in healthcare and payment sectors that are evaluating and planning to introduce block chain technology in the next three years. By 2021, it is estimated that block chain technology will be applied to such systems as grading medical treatment, medical insurance payment system and commercial insurance payment system.

As healthcare institutions are getting digitalized, patients now are not only able to retrieve health-related information for their own benefits, but also to independently measure, collect and share their health data. As nanotechnology advances, from sensors to diversified health monitoring devices (portable, wearable, implanted and absorbable)and networking consumer electronics(smartphones, wearable personal health devices and fitness trackers), the number of IoT-enabled sensors that are able to measure and transmit data automatically has increased remarkably, making patient-generated data (PGD) now a significant and valuable source of information for clinical decisions.

By 2021, 20% of healthcare facilities and 40% of life science companies will achieve productivity gains of 15%-20% through the use of cognitive or artificial intelligence technology.

According to IDC’s 2016 IT and Communications Survey (from January to March 2017), only 7% of healthcare institutions and 27% of payers (namely only 8% of the participants in healthcare industry) had introduced cognitive or manual intelligent technology. By 2021,operable cognitive technologies are expected to become the core competency and a primary working tool throughout the life science industry.

The adoption of robots in healthcare and life science sector can help automate existing processes and rebuild established systems. According to IDC’s Survey: 2017 World Robot Survey and the Investment Plan for Robot Deployment in Hospitals, 31% of hospitals with over 200 beds in North America, 27%of hospitals in Western Europe and 15%in Asia Pacific have already invested in robots or planned to adopt robots in 2017. Existing infrastructure, systems, network and system capabilities need upgrades to support robots.

By 2021, 20% of health care organizations will complete pilot block chain projects and begin to apply block chain technology to operations management and patient identification.

By the end of 2020, 15% of the data used for diagnosis and treatment will be collected and shared with the diagnosis and treatment information system (data models included).

By 2020, a quarter of hospitals with 200 or more beds will deploy robots to do time-consuming jobs, reduce manual operation and errors, while improve the sustainability of business operations and patient safety.

Both frequency and type of threats to health care facilities are growing quickly, as such organizations are considered as soft targets. As IDC predicts, viruses that can hijack medical devices will be the third wave of cyber attacks to medical institutions, following theft and blackmail of patient data, which can lead to harm to patients’ health, but also to the network, in addition to financial losses. By 2022, aided by artificial intelligence and machine learning, the complexity of cyber attacks will increase dramatically. By then, medical device providers will face class actions for damage caused by cyber attacks to the patients.

Driven by the need for robust data management, 20% of commercial payment companies will apply BPaaS(business process as a service) contract models for their back offices by 2021.

For many payers, outsourcing important back-office functions to BPaaS providers can be a good choice and solution, since BPaaS will expand and optimize the operating center, by involving global talents and effectively leveraging the professional knowledge in healthcare and medical insurance administration, and making use of robotics process automation (RPA).Outsourcing now has been an alternative for the medical insurance industry in China. For example, Liaoyang Social Security Insurance Bureau has outsourced medical claims and expense management to Neusoft, meaning outsourcing has been a choice for the governmental departments.

IoT platforms for hospital assets monitoring and tracking can help improve inventory management, the overall operational efficiency and reliability of the supply chain, and while strengthen employee satisfaction, timeliness of healthcare and patient safety. In Asia Pacific, IDC’s 2016 Asia Pacific Health Survey revealed that 40% of large hospitals were planning to deploy IoT platforms in hope of optimizing the allocation of resources and assets to improve patient experiences. Besides, the planning of IoT systems includes the support for clinical care, telemedicine and the use of patient-generated data.

观察图3中的曲线发现,CNTs/EP复合材料存在明显的PTC(正温度系数)现象。

By 2021, digital medical services will account for 6% of global total medical expenditure.

The new generation of digital healthcare services is approaching as a convenient and individual alternative for consumers. According to China Internet Medical Market Forecast, 2017-2021, the number of Internet medical visits reached 3.7 million in 2016, and is expected to reach 23.4 million in 2017.The number is expected to grow rapidly and continuously in the following years,to 480 million in 2021, accounting for about 6% of all medical visits. Around the world, digital healthcare services will account for 6% of global medical expenditures by 2021.

Xiao Hongliang, a senior research manager from the department of China healthcare industry research and consulting services at IDC Health Insights, said:“At present, the digital transformation for healthcare industry is a global trend, as various new technologies are transforming the models of medical diagnose and treatment services, hospital management and operation, drug development and supply, clinic science research, patient involvement and so on. Besides new technologies, the medical reform policies of China will be another stimulator for the digital medical transformation. It is estimated that in the next three years, a new model of medical and healthcare services that integrates healthcare, medical insurance and medicine will come into being, helping realizing the goal of ‘Healthy China 2030’.”
