2018 Smart Home Connecting the Isolated Devices Ushering in Booming Development
6 third platform technical accelerators are promoting smart home to enter the rapid development phase from an early stage, as the Internet of Things and mobile apps are connecting a smart home. The IDC believes that in 2018 there will be more and increasingly diverse smart home products, content and services centering on four scenarios common to future consumers, namely work, learning, living and entertainment. It is a need to further improve the interoperability and strengthen the partnership with content and service providers, to jointly promote the digital life style.

“IDC Future Citizen” illustrates the multi-entry interaction and links between future consumers and digital devices in the four scenarios of work, learning, living and entertainment. These four scenarios make the directions for smart home clear.
Work in smart home
Digital transformation is driving the changes in business models and people doing their jobs. Small offices or home offices are getting more popular as a lifestyle, and are quite favored by “makers” and “freelancers”. However, remote meetings,multi-user teamwork and other cooperation in workplace put up new requirements for the home office environments, such as HD smart cameras, always-online smartphones and PCs, smart sound boxes changing from a simple loud speaker into full-service terminals. All smart home devices and technologies have to meet the increasing demand for business functions.

The digital transformation helps the education market grow into an intelligent and integrated ecosystem with diversified products and services, and core users have changed from schools to composite users of teachers, students and parents.Emerging technologies and facilities have reconstructed the existing education environment, while they have brought in new scenarios for education like distance education, immersive classroom, adaptive learning and so on. Consumer IT devices, such as PCs, smartphones, and tablets, need a deeper integration with smart home environment for learning scenarios, through collaboration with related content and service providers, making them an integral part of the digital learning ecosystem.
Besides, traditional smart home devices, such as companion robots, may take the ride of digitalized early childhood education and K12 education, if manufacturers can optimize their products and services, seize the opportunities and further explore the market.
Learn with smart home
In addition, in consideration of the safety of data and information, smart home devices must adhere to higher and stricter security standards, so the demand of intelligent gateway, intelligent routers and other smart devices for security technologies will become a new growth point, such as information encryption and intelligent monitoring.
Manager of terminal system research department at IDC China,Zhang Yilei, said: “At present, most smart home products and applications are single-purpose and vertically developed, so they are isolated and lack interoperability and interconnection for different usage scenarios. You have to connect to and control them through PCs,smart phones or other traditional intelligent terminals. In short term, such products can somewhat meet market demand, stimulate the mar-ket to grow, but they are difficult to become fully integrated in a user’s home environment. There are still few solutions that can improve users’ long-term stickiness. In the long run, smart home product producers and technical service providers need to optimize their product and service processes, and provide smart devices, applications and services that support real time strategies, by jointly considering all usage scenarios, building a comprehensive solution platform, carrying out cross-industry integration and collaboration, partnering with strategic product and technology providers, and cooperating with content and service providers that are leading changes in lifestyle.”

Entertain oneself in smart home
The revolution in family entertainment has just begun, and the time has gone when the families spent time together by sitting around in the living room in front of the TV. In the future, we will have home entertainment through different and diversified terminals. As vigorous development of the pan-entertainment market and the pursuit of digital generation for diversified digital experiences, smart home will function as the center for home entertainment more frequently. Devices such as smart TVs and OTT boxes, together with artificial intelligence technology, will learn users’ behaviors and habits, and then provide them with their preferred services and personalized entertainment. To realize that, in-depth cooperation with entertainment content and service providers will be the key.
Living in smart home
As the main market for smart home technologies and products, these terminals serve as life facilitators, not so smart or single-function, only supporting simple notifications or remote control. With the application of maturing technologies such as artificial intelligence, image recognition, voice recognition and surrounding environment monitoring, smart home terminals in future digital life scenarios will be highly integrated and interconnected, and can be adjusted smartly. There are two important requirements for smart home in the living scenarios, namely safety and convenience. So it demands relevant manufacturers to closely watch the changes in lifestyle and family life, such as the needs of emerging middle-class families for pet care, elderly care and multi-property management, in order to develop new services for modern lives.
