The turn of this year was marked by Tencent’s raft of purchase activities. The Internet giant declared investment in multiple retail companies including Yonghui Superstores,Carrefour, Wanda, and HLA. It commenced the new round of forging alliance for investment.For example, Tencent joined hands with Yonghui to invest in Carrefour China, and allied JD,Suning, and Sunac China to invest in Dalian Wanda Commercial Properties Co., Ltd. As for now, this flurry of investments in the retail field is estimated at over RMB 20 billion.
However, Alibaba is still a step ahead. Before Tencent’s moves, Alibaba had invested a total of RMB 80 billion in the retail field. After its executive chairman Jack Ma first proposed the concept of “new retail” in October 2016, Alibaba started its purchase frenzy in the field.
In its “new retail” layout,Fresh Hema, the chain store famed for its fresh seafood, is Alibaba’s primary test field.Based on its experiment in Fresh Hema, the e-business giant has rolled out its “new retail”deployment, penetrating such tangible sites as supermarkets,department stores, and shopping malls, showing its intention to subvert traditional business models.
