The Science of Reading Research on English as the First Language, by QIAO Xiaomei & ZHANG Xinwen, p.1

Reading research on English as the first language has always emphasized its scientific nature in its long course of development. By the end of the twenties century, there appeared a specific academic society and periodicals with “Scientific Studies of Reading” as their theme and keywords. The current study addresses the three aspects of scientific studies of reading, i.e, what the scientific studies of reading is, why to conduct scientific studies of reading, and how to conduct scientific studies of reading basing on the summary of a large amount of English reading research to introduce the young discipline with only twenty years of development history. Recent representative studies will also be introduced to show how scientific studies of reading develops into an interdisciplinary field of research in recent years under the influence of psychology, cognitive science, neuroscience and other disciplines.

In foreign language (FL) teaching, the “reading for discussion” model aims to provide the learners with social contexts where they are exposed to and learn to use FL to transmit meaning in oral interaction with others. In this model the learners are wainly trained with three language skills, i.e. reading, writing, and speaking. By gaining practices in reading, writing, and speaking, students are given opportunities to make significant improvements in their levels of foreign language proficiency. In addition, the “reading for discussion”model helps improve students’ language learning motivation and offers the added benefit of processing the foreign language more deeply and internalizing their knowledge through implicit learning.

A Corpus-based Study on Translational English of Interpretive Panels of Tourist Spots, by ZHU Huifen & LI Changbao, p.74

The paper presents an analysis of news translation studies in China based on the collected periodicals and dissertations from 2000 to 2017 in the CNKI database. Such tools as Endnote and Refworks are employed to extract data and CiteSpace, is applied for analysis through visualized graphs that show the high frequency words, the highly influential authors, the active research institutes and burst terms. By interpreting these graphs, the analysis and description reveal the current trends of news translation research, research topics, objects of study, methodologies, perspectives, etc., aiming to provide tentative suggestion for future endeavor in this field.

Towards the Cultivation of Innovation Competency and Global Literacy for Chinas Integrated Foreign Language Talents in Compliance with the National Strategies, by WANG Yinquan, p.43

Interpretive panels are important means for tourist spots to convey information and generate international publicity. They are of great importance in building better self-image and reputation for the tourist spots and cities concerned. This paper, based on Translational English Corpus of Interpretive Panels of Tourist Spots in China (TECIPTSC) and English Corpus of Interpretive Panels of Tourist Spots Abroad (ECIPTSA), attempts to study on the linguistic features of translational English texts of interpretive panels of tourist spots. The results show that there are some differences between TECIPTSC and ECIPTSA in terms of STTR, high frequency words, personal pronouns and average sentence length. At linguistic level, translational English texts of interpretive panels of tourist spots in China need to attach importance to word richness and sentence length so as to improve their readability; At cultural level, target readers’ cultural background and reading habit are the indispensable factors that should be taken into consideration; At communicative level, more first person and second person pronouns are suggested to be employed so as to achieve a better communicative effect.

Innovation competency is an important indicator for a country and a nation’s core competitiveness. Institutions of higher learning should make contribution to the country’s innovation-driven development strategy while making breakthroughs in the innovation of the education concept and teaching models so as to keep abreast of the times. The key to the country’s implementation of the innovation-driven development strategy is to bring into full play the role of human resources. It is therefore important for China’s higher education to make transformation and expansion in its talent cultivation models to back up building an innovation-oriented country and the country’s participation in global governance. The essence of education for innovation and entrepreneurship rests with the cultivation of the creative spirit and entrepreneurial competence among all the students. Consequently, the cultivation of foreign language talents should make drastic transformation and upgrading to serve the country’s national strategies by focusing on the cultivation of innovative and inter-disciplinary talents empowered with critical thinking and globalization literacy by referring to the implementation of research-based teaching so as to ensure that they will be able to construct and upgrade their knowledge structure in their future career endeavors, adapt to the individual need of sustainable development, measure up to the needs from social and economic development and become international talents with global vision, familiarity with international rules and the ability to participate in international affairs and global competition so as to contribute to the country’s national strategies. The ultimate goal is to ensure that they will be expected to play an active role in the overseas promotion of the Chinese culture, the implementation of the Belt and Road initiative and the boost of China’s participation in global governance.

传统教学模式的出发点,在教学中忽视了学生的主体地位,没有很好地解决“学生如何去学”这一问题,导致学生在被动学完课程后仍不能熟练地综合应用课程的内容、原理和方法。学生主动性不足,必然导致学习效率不高。
